International Chess
Class email: Chess@csandover.org
The chess club provides students a fun filled experience to learn and practice chess skills. For beginners, students will learn the rules of the game, chess notation, and chess tactics. For students with some chess experience, we will teach some strategies of chess, such as the opening, middle game and end game. For advanced students, they can improve their skills through playing with teacher assistants or the teacher.
The class is mostly unstructured, meaning it is not a classroom setting, but playing games. Students may be asked to solve puzzles when the situation is appropriate. Currently, the club has several highly motivated high school student volunteers helping students so that each student has our attention at all times. A little bit about myself: I founded the CSA chess club 8 years ago and taught students since then. I love to work with kids and believe the philosophy of learning by playing. I was a volunteer at the North Andover Franklin School Chess club and I was a chess merit badge counselor at the Boy Scouts of America Troop 87.
Wushu

Instructor Dennis Chen is practicing martial artist in both contemporary Wushu and traditional Kung fu. He has 15 years of experience in Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut under Sifu Kevin Chan, as well as 2 years of contemporary wushu from China. Dennis is accomplished in various competitions such as the International Chinese Martial Arts Competition, Kuoshu, and New Tang Dynasty Traditional Martial Arts Tournament.
Choy Lee Fut is a tradition system of Southern Kung fu which combines the martial arts techniques from various Northern and Southern Chinese kung-fu systems; the powerful arm and hand techniques from the Shaolin animal forms from the South, combined with the extended, circular movements, twisting body, and agile footwork that characterizes Northern China’s martial arts. It is considered an external style, combining soft and hard techniques, as well as incorporating a wide range of weapons as part of its curriculum.[5] Choy Li Fut is an effective self-defense system,[6] particularly noted for defense against multiple attackers.[7] It contains a wide variety of techniques, including long and short range punches, kicks, sweeps and take downs, pressure point attacks, joint locks, and grappling. According to Bruce Lee, “Choy Li Fut is the most effective system that I’ve seen for fighting more than one person. [It] is one of the most difficult styles to attack and defend against. Choy Li Fut is the only style [of kung fu] that traveled to Thailand to fight the Thai boxers and hadn’t lost.”
Wushu is a contemporary sport standardized by China after 1946. Currently, it has become an international sport through the International Wushu Federation and was debuted as the Beijing Olympics as a guest event. Competitions are based on sanda (fighting) and taolu (forms), which are similar to gymnastic routines Students will learn a range of techniques from punches and kicks to weapons such as swords and staves. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in local tournaments to test their skills against other school for friendly competition!

Computer Programming
Class email: ComputerProgramming@csandover.org
Class Hours: Saturdays: 10:00 am – 10:45 am
The instructor intends to build and provide a long-term learning pathfor motivated students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills on computer programming, computer science and technology, from grade 4 to12 (10-12 years old).
In this semester, the learning material will be prepared and distributed by the instructor either in URL links or PDF files. Part of the coding practice will be on a text-based interface logged into a remote computer prepared and provided by the instructor. As students’ ability develops, the instructor will lead students to write code and run programs on students’ own computer. In order for that, it requires installing more software on the student’s computer. Those software are free. If parents have security concern on intalling these software, then need to provide the student with a dedicated computer without important family data stored on it.
For text-based coding, students can login into the remote computer for practice during certain time periods over each week. If students need longer time to use the remote computer, instructor will consider and accommodate accordingly.
Student needs one of these types of devices to follow the lesson:
• Mac computer, desktop or laptop.
• Linux computer, desktop or laptop.
• Windows computer, desktop or laptop. Windows computer must have (free open-source) “putty” software installed. Instructor can guide through the process.
Robotics – Beginner
Class email: RoboticsBeginner@csandover.org
Camp hours: twice per week, for 5 weeks total: Mon/Wed 4:00 – 5:30 pm (6/21 – 7/21, 7/26 – 8/25)
This class gives kids the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of robotics, including the logic and programming knowledge required to design and develop solutions to real-world problems. Students use simulation software to control a virtual EV3 robot, incorporating different type of sensors and robot attachments to create fun programs.
Over the course of 5 weeks, student will learn about loops and various sensors, including Ultrasonic and Color. Using simulation software, they will programmer virtual robots to complete certain tasks, like using the color sensor to stay inside a marked black square… Also they will apply what they learn to design and program robots for a sumo competition as last project.
$30 material fee is to cover one year VRT software license fee.
The 5 weeks camp is hosted by a group of 10 accomplished high school seniors and college STEM students with years of experience in FTC team, EV3, Python/Java programming.
